New Domain Name Registrations Reflect Unique Nature of Wireless Web

This year one of the most ubiquitous new features in cyberspace has been the announcement and marketing of wireless internet services. With cellular phones, personal digital assistants, and other web-enabled appliances being purchased in increasing numbers, domain name registrations for wireless-related names has hit an all-time high. With more and more companies and surfers on the web, domain names generally are becoming a valuable commodity. However, domain name buyers and sellers feel that names relating to broadband and wireless industries will yield very handsome profits, and for interesting reasons.

"Wireless is unique in that no one platform or device is or will likely be a dominant player." notes Sean Dennis, recent purchaser of the internet domains allplatform.com and alldevice.com. "Unlike the PC-dominated web of today, the wireless web will consist of a diverse range of devices including PCs, cellular phones, PDAs, GPS units, and perhaps even things like fish finders and heart rate monitors. Given the wide range of possibilities, it will be difficult for companies to find and brand names that cover such a broad spectrum of technologies. This will necessarily drive the price of good "dot com" domain names up."

Another unique factor in driving prices and values up is the actual length and wordiness of the term "wireless". Short domain names have proven to be preferred by web surfers for many reasons including memorability, ease of spelling, and convenience. Many companies have had success appending words and acronyms to "web" and "net" in forming their web identities. However, with no real way to abbreviate "wireless" it will be much more difficult for companies to make the short, snappy name that is vital to business on the web.

The majority of name brokers are in agreement with this view of the market for wireless-related domains.
