Qtown and Chi Town Make Musical Magic
CHICAGO, May 2 /PRNewswire/ -- A new indie record label has set up shop in Chicago. It's called Qtown Record Company and its signed artists include local gems from Chi Town as well as rising stars from both coasts. Qtown gets its name from founder and CEO, Jacob Q. Steinberg, an entrepreneur and avid music fan. Although he refuses to reveal what the ``Q'' stands for, he's excited and optimistic about his new venture, ``I've known for some time that I wanted to establish a record company but the timing was never quite right. When another business interest required me to travel extensively between Chicago and the East Coast, I seized the opportunity to make the dream of Qtown a reality. Chicago has always been one of my favorite cities and its musical traditions are legendary.''
The Qtown label's marquee artist is Chicago's own Roz Ellington. Her debut CD, entitled Touched, presents what listeners will one day come to know as ``classic Qtown''. Touched is a stylish, carefully executed project which showcases Ellington's versatility as a vocalist, writer, producer and arranger. It's Urban Contemporary R&B at its best. The CD is available at a host of local stores, including Hear Music, Tower Records, the Virgin Megastore, Crow's Nest, Sam Goody, Dr. Wax and Borders. It's also made an impressive showing on MP3.com. Ellington says being signed to Qtown is far more of a business and creative partnership than what's typically found in the record industry, ``At the major labels, real creative control tends to be negotiated in relationship to the profits generated by an artist. Had it been released by another company, Touched might have been less about who I am and what I have to say than what the label felt would sell.'' Ellington is also closely involved in the marketing of Touched and all related decision making processes. ``This is my assurance to her that she retains control of her creative property. I'm just a guardian angel she found on her way to greatness,'' says Steinberg.
