Techguide.com and Lucent Technologies Collaborate in Examining Issues in the Deployment and Management of VPNs

Managing the Costs and Complexities Of VPN Deployment

VPN technology, which provides a secure tunnel for enterprise connectivity over the public Internet, is widely recognized as a key enabler for business continuity and viability in the new Internet-based economy. VPNs provide a means for businesses to leverage the cost and universal connectivity benefits of Internet-based processes and applications, providing secure, extended access to corporate users, business partners, off-site employees and customers, all using the Internet as the underlying transport facility.

According to Jerry Ryan, Editor-in-Chief for the Applied Technology Group, "The value that VPNs bring to businesses adds up to more than just cost savings -- it opens the door for new business methods and even new business opportunities. But deploying a VPN solution comes with technical and operational complexities that have to be both clearly understood and carefully managed if the VPN is to be a success."

"VPNs may be managed either by the customer or by a VPN service provider, or management may be shared by both parties," said Ryan. "In addition, VPNs may be deployed either at the customer premises or at a VPN service provider's Point of Presence POP. In addition, a variety of issues including policy-based VPN management, QoS over VPNs, and integrated access devices (IADs) should be understood by those organizations contemplating VPN deployment."

The many issues associated with VPN deployment are discussed further in the latest ATG Technology Guide (white paper) entitled, "Managing the Costs and Complexities of VPN Deployment", written and published by ATG's techguide.com service and available free, on-line at www.techguide.com.

This Technology Guide examines current and emerging issues in VPN deployment and management, as well as some of the technology that is currently available to support VPNs.
