Chicago Singer/Songwriter battles the Smartest Person in the World
CHICAGO - "The Einstein of our time is perplexed, there's more to life than I.Q. tests" sings Chicago Singer/Songwriter Thomas Lisa in "Questions for Marilyn", a song from his newly released debut CD.
The Marilyn in question is Marilyn vos Savant, noted author of the weekly Parade magazine column "Ask Marilyn", and owner of the highest I.Q. ever recorded according to the Guinness Book of World Records.
The idea for the song came while reading her column, says Lisa. "She spends a lot of time answering your basic train A meets train B word problem questions. It's the kind of theoretical problem solving stuff that most folks leave behind once they've left college and entered the real world." he says.
Of particular ire, says Lisa, is the "ivory towers vibe behind the whole thing. People basically write in and try and trick her. But she always and I mean ALWAYS gets the correct answer. She seems like a very nice woman. She's always very polite in her column. Yet at the same time, there's an 'I am always right' undertow that's kind of creepy".
As proof, Thomas cites the "Marilyn is Wrong" website (www.wiskit.com/marilyn.html) that points out mistakes Marilyn has made in prior columns. Although she knows of its existence, Marilyn avoids responding to this popular website because she "doesn't visit Web sites run by non professionals devoted to negative commentary".
"To me, the issue of whether she's right or wrong is kind of immaterial", comments Lisa. "I don't care when train A meets train B. There are plenty of real life problems that are plaguing the world today. My question to Marilyn is "Why is the smartest person in the world working on problems we already have the answer to?".
"When Albert Einstein died, he donated his body to science because he knew, regardless of his wishes, his brain would be dissected to determine why he was so intelligent. They'll probably do the same for Marilyn. Not just to see why she was so smart, but to see why she wasted her potential" jokes Lisa.
