DIEBOLD SELECTS TAG IT TO E-PUBLISH MUSIC INDUSTRY SURVIVAL PLAN
TI to be e-publisher & syndicator of Diebold White Paper "Wanted: A Survival Plan for the Music Industry - Napster and the Consequences"
New York, NY -- January 15, 2001 -- Diebold, a leading German management and technology consultancy, has selected Tag It, an online infomediary in the entertainment and New Media sectors, as the e-publisher of its White Paper, "Wanted: A Survival Plan for the Music Industry - Napster and the Consequences." The 80-page study provides an analysis of the current Internet strategies of the five largest record labels and their online rivals within the context of the evolving marketplace to challenge while drawing a roadmap to the music industry.
Tag It will conduct a coordinated campaign to engage industry professionals and decision makers into the study through its B2B trade e-Journal MusicDish as well as the companys online consulting division. MusicDish plans to publish selected segments of the White Paper through its sites such as "This is the end, my only friend, the end...," a polemic written by Internet guru Isaac van Deelen on the state of the industry. In addition, the trade journal will feature a discussion series featuring the perspectives of various industry experts on the White Papers five hypotheses that constitutes a potential 'worst case scenario for the majors:
| | - Low-income target groups will not be prepared to pay for downloads charged for by record labels on the Internet.
- Even the high-income target groups are only prepared to pay for music over the Internet if it is enhanced by significant benefits.
- The time-to-market of large record labels will be substantially longer than that of pure internet enterprises.
- In terms of music product enhancement through information and services, record labels and artists are clearly left behind by online providers.
- The number of known artists circumventing record labels in favor of direct selling will significantly increase in the next years.
|
Beyond its role as an e-publisher, the agreement provides for Tag It to license portions of the White Paper through its syndication service and partners such as iSyndicate. The company has worked over the years to develop content solutions for online companies from original production to content ASP services. This will allow Diebold to fully exploit all potential revenue channels while increasing exposure to the study. The move follows similar publishing/syndication agreements with more brick-and-mortars companies such as book publisher Muska & Lipman.
| | - were impressed with the quality of analysis in the study, which we felt surpassed that of their American counterparts," explained Tag It CEO, Eric de Fontenay. "As our core business is engaging the industry on the challenges transforming the industry, particularly on issue surrounding digital distribution and p2p, the synergies were obvious. In addition, Diebold is able to benefit from our experience over the years in creating business solutions around high-quality content. This allows us to exploit all possible revenue channels, including direct sales and licensing."

The e-Report was followed by "The Digital Economy: How Digital Goods Are Reshaping The Rules Of Commerce", a paper examining the emergence of p2p and impact on e-business published in COMMUNICATIONS & STRATEGIES' 10th Anniversary special issue "From the Net to the New Economy: Critical and Prospective Views." The papers author Eric de Fontenay has been invited to keynote on the subject at the IDATE Foundation Seminar in Montpellier France last November as well as the upcoming Internet Entertainment Expo 2001 and Paris Net 2001 World Internet Congress.
""We chose TAG IT as our distribution partner for the US as we believe that this one of the best partners in the industry," said Andreas Becker, Senior Consultant with Diebold We are looking forward to this exiting relationship."
