SYMBIAN AND POINTBASE PARTNER TO DELIVER WIRELESS ENTERPRISE APPLICATIONS
World's smallest footprint 100% pure Java database from PointBase optimized for next generation mobile phones through partnership with Symbian.
LONDON and MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA - February 5, 2001 - Symbian, the leading software platform provider for Wireless Information Devices (WIDs), today announced that PointBase, the leader in platform independent technology for data management and synchronization, has become a Symbian Enterprise Technology Partner. PointBase, which has the world's smallest footprint among 100% Pure Java databases, has been optimized to run on the Symbian platform, enabling enterprise applications to include local storage capabilities on Symbian-based smart-phones and communicators.
Symbian's Enterprise Technology Partner program offers leading wireless technology providers the opportunity to work closely with Symbian in developing enabling technologies and to engage in co-marketing campaigns, thereby adding value to the Symbian platform. Symbian also assists technology partners in engaging directly with Symbian's licensees and other partners to enable rapid time-to-market for a wide range of WIDs. Symbian's licensees include Ericsson, Kenwood, Motorola, Nokia, Panasonic, Psion, Sanyo and Sony.
With the PointBase family of platform-independent mobile and network databases, users of Symbian-based devices can now have continuous access to their data and corporate applications even when disconnected from the network. PointBase is especially well suited for these applications because it has the world's smallest footprint among pure Java databases and because the company has taken a leadership role in developing and supporting the SyncML universal standard for data synchronization. PointBase's leadership position has resulted in its selection as the exclusive Java database bundled with each of the three leading Java interactive development environments (IDEs) - Forte for Java Tools from Sun Microsystems, Inc.; VisualCafe from WebGain, Inc.; and CodeWarrior 6.0 from Metrowerks, a subsidiary of Motorola, Inc.
"PointBase databases were designed from the ground up to provide precisely the functionality developers want on the Symbian platform," said Bruce Scott, founder and CEO of PointBase. "It permits almost any device to easily access and work with data from any system, anytime and anywhere. With PointBase running on the Symbian platform, developers will be able to push the envelope on wireless e-commerce solutions that seamlessly automate data synchronization, as well as installation and updates of distributed applications."
Jeremy Copp, VP Business Relationships, Symbian, commented, "Symbian's heritage is one of partnership - working with the industry to promote the rapid growth and acceptance of next generation mobile phones. Our partnership with Pointbase will encourage the take up of Symbian-based devices in the enterprise, a key user market that we're targeting with our licensees. With the Pointbase solution businesses will be able to ensure secure and safe remote access with Symbian-based devices to information and data stored on corporate servers."
