"Confessions of Shameless Self Promoters" story: Gov Jesse Ventura Gives Minnesota Mompreneur 15 Minutes of Fame
Appearing in the April 2001 book by Debbie Allen "Confessions of Shameless Self Promoters", alongside famous contributors such as Mark Victor Hansen (Chicken Soup books) and John Kremer (1001 Ways to Market Your Books), is mystery novelist and "Mompreneur" Natalie Buske Thomas; her story about how she grabbed 15 minutes of fame from a gutsy meeting with the media-loving Governor of Minnesota, Jesse Ventura.
Natalie started her self-publishing business when she was a 29 year old mom of two. Two of her mystery novels have been selected by OPRAH's online reading groups where she has appeared as a guest author. (keyword: OPRAH). Her books have been reviewed by Library Journal, about.com, The Charlotte Austin Review. She's landed major wholesaler accounts with Ingram, Baker & Taylor. All from her home computer with the kiddos under her feet.
For the fun of it (and to inspire other authors) Natalie has posted her rejection slips on her website -- a "neener, neener, neener" to the editors who turned her down along the way.
It was spunk that got her where she is today, working on her fifth book. Natalie's story of how she arranged to meet Gov Jesse Ventura during his Tour 2000 through Minnesota, is one example of her creativity in gaining publicity. With no family money or connections, Natalie has been "shamelessly self-promoting" to gain attention.
Of course, without entertaining novels to back up her stunts she wouldn't have made it this far, but it's Natalie's contagious enthusiasm that draws readers to her "pizza loving detective" series.
