rSchool Detective provides solution to internet plagiarism

Pennsauken, NJ/February 23, 2001 -- Educational software publisher, AbleSoft Systems, announced today that they've released the latest version of their internet anti-plagiarism solution called rSchool Detective." In recent months, rSchool Detective has become their top-selling product among those newly released for the 2000-2001 school year. Available at retail outlets for $29.95 for unlimited use and also available direct to schools through site license purchases, rSchool Detective provides an affordable solution to combat growing internet plagiarism.

rSchool Detective empowers educators to detect instances of plagiarism across the internet in a matter of minutes. In a few moments, teachers import from 1-1000+ student-written documents into the application (text files, Microsoft Word and Word Perfect files). rSchool Detective then takes each file and scans the internet to determine if any of the content was taken from the internet. Each file takes a few minutes to scan, but is designed to run in the background automatically so teachers can do other work.

rSchool Detective then reports back if any plagiarism was found in the document and the percent plagiarized. The text of the student work is underlined, displaying links to web pages where the exact text may be found. The detailed report can be printed or saved in a text file so the teacher can confirm the plagiarism and review the material with school administration.

Students today have access to enormous amounts of information on the web that is very easy to cut, paste and reformat into what appears to be the students own work," said AbleSoft president Mr. Keith Mintzer. Many students are not even aware that this is a violation of copyright law. Teachers may know at a glance when a paper is not the original work of a particular student, but proving that can be very difficult."

One method is to type key words into search engines, but applying that method to the papers of every student in a class could take days, and some sites are not accessible through conventional search engines. rSchool Detective not only uses advanced search technology, but the application scans popular and little-know cheat" sites that offer pre-written student papers.

The program can test a paper in less than three minutes, a fraction of the time it takes other similar programs," said Elliott Levine, chief communications officer at rSchool.com. "It is also more thorough and accurate, tracking down out nearly every plagiarized line in a paper. Just knowing that a teacher is armed with this tool will greatly discourage students from copying material straight from the Web."

rSchool Detective is one of three programs contained in Teachers Internet Tools, a package of products that enable teachers to make the best possible use of the World Wide Web. The other programs include CoffeeCup HTML Express, a web page creation program requiring no HTML knowledge; and Internet Image Library, offering a wide selection of graphics designed to enhance any school web page.
