iventurelab to Brief Congressional Privacy Caucus About Web Bugs
PITTSBURGH, PA -- March 1, 2001 -- The bipartisan, bicameral Congressional Privacy Council (CPC) will be holding its first briefing today in the 107th Congress to discuss threats to consumer Internet privacy via web bugs. Intelytics, Inc., a business specializing in Internet privacy, security, data mining, and intelligence, was launched last month as an iventurelab partner company. At the CPC briefing today, Intelytics automated web bug detection technology will be showcased before a panel of leading industry experts on a fact-finding mission to learn more about web bugs and to discuss the governments role in protecting consumer online privacy.
Web bugs are tracking devices deployed by Internet marketing and ad companies to monitor the activity of online users. Intelytics has identified twenty-three different web bug patterns in four different type categories. At todays hearing, Intelytics will run a live demo of soon-to-be-released technology that automatically identifies and eradicates web bugs from networked systems. The company will also demonstrate the numerous, often-insidious ways that web bugs can be used to violate consumer online privacy.
Historically, the arrival of new technologies has always been associated with the invasion of privacy, which is a justifiable and extremely serious concern in the electronic age," said Tommy Wang, CEO and Co-Founder of iventurelab. We are excited about this opportunity to educate our nations leaders and the public about the severity of the threat posed to online consumers by web bugs and hope to make progress today in our ongoing mission to minimize privacy risk for businesses and individual users alike."
The CPC is co-chaired by Sen. Richard Shelby, R-AL; Sen. Christopher Dodd, D-CT; Rep. Edward Markey, D-MA; and Rep. Joe Barton, R-Texas. Other speakers scheduled to address the caucus include Christine A. Varney, Counsel to the industry-led Online Privacy Alliance and former Federal Trade Commissioner, Gary Clayton, founder and CEO of the Privacy Council, and Richard Smith, Privacy Foundation Chief Technology Officer.
