CALIFORNIA POWER CRISIS HIGHLIGHTS NEED FOR COMPREHENSIVE DISASTER READINESS--INCLUDING PROTECTION AGAINST DATA LOSS
Storactives Real-time Backup Software Provides Up-To-The-Minute Data Protection and More for Adexa Corporation
MARINA DEL REY, CA -- March 21, 2001 - Software developer Storactive, Inc. has announced that its LiveBackup 2.0, the only client-server real-time" backup and recovery software solution for Windows 95, 98, NT, and 2000 systems, can help businesses safeguard their data from loss up to the minute a disaster strikes. Storactive has noted increasing interest in LiveBackup 2.0 over the past several weeks of the California power crisis. The company believes recent rolling blackouts and the ever-present threat of disasters, virus attacks, hard drive/system failures and general user errors have highlighted the need for organizations to draft comprehensive disaster readiness/risk management plans that include backup systems to protect against data loss.
Adexa, Inc., a Southern California collaborative commerce solution provider and an early adopter of LiveBackup 2.0, agrees. The recent power crunch is a wakeup call to businesses that they cannot be lackadaisical in their approach to storage backup and data protection," said Joe Germanos, manager of internal systems at Adexa. Organizations need to re-examine outdated backup solutions that do not provide up-to-the-minute protection, because in the information age, ANY lost data can translate into large amounts of lost time, lost productivity, and lost money."
According to a Pepperdine University study by economics professor David Smith, the costs associated with data loss were roughly $11.8 billion in 1998 alone, and that figure is continually rising. Corporations such as those in e-commerce where core operations depend on the continuous availability of electronic information could be especially hard hit in a data loss disaster scenario, particularly in regard to lost customer information. Most businesses have installed some form of data storage backup system, but these systems often prove to be inadequate in that they do not continuously back up files and/or do not back up files at both the workstation and server levels.
Storactives LiveBackup 2.0 provides real-time" backup, which backs up user files as soon as changes to those files are made. Real-time backup has advantages over scheduled network backup, the standard of most companies, since a complete diary of all saved data is backed up--not just the data that was saved to a server at the last (often weekly) scheduled backup. Without any additional effort at the user level, all data that was saved up to the second before a disaster strikes will be backed up in the data archives. Thus, should a file accidentally be deleted or wiped out, it can easily be restored. The entire saved-saved" real-time backup process happens transparently in the background, without any noticeable decrease in system performance, and LiveBackup uses network bandwidth only sparingly.
Because LiveBackup 2.0 works at the workstation level, data loss from minor" disasters is also protected against, such as when an employee accidentally deletes a file on a PC that was worked on all day. LiveBackup even works when computers are disconnected from a network, as when laptops are taken home from the office. All new data and file changes are temporarily stored on the hard drive and will be backed up onto the server when the user re-connects to the network.
LiveBackup 2.0 is the best solution Adexa has found that provides reliable workstation backup that is not obtrusive to end-users," Joe Germanos says. Whats more, it is extremely easy to use, both by IT managers and ordinary employees."
Should a power outage, virus attack or other disaster result in a problem, LiveBackup provides a self-serve Recovery Assistant that enables users to recover data files step by step without burdening IT administrators. For serious problems, LiveBackup 2.0 includes System Rollback, which allows IT administrators to easily restore malfunctioning PCs to a known good state. The software also provides full "bare-metal" disaster recovery if a PC is lost, stolen or unbootable.
While focused on the workstation level, LiveBackup centralizes management of PC backup at the server level for IT administrators. Thus, the cost of maintaining PCs in a corporate environment could be drastically reduced. This is especially evident in the case of data migration. LiveBackup 2.0 includes the Migration Assistant, a wizard-driven tool that allows administrators to swiftly move user data from older Windows 95/98/NT workstations to Windows 2000 PCs. Migration can be conducted remotely to live PCs without bringing them off-line.
Because Storactives LiveBackup 2.0 was designed around the needs of todays users and exploits knowledge about real-world data use, it offers a level of data protection never before available in backup products. Organizations can safeguard their data from loss up to the minute a disaster strikes, and should problems occur, all files can be easily restored.
