R & D Employees Earn $15,250 to $250,000+
The composite R&D practitioner with the highest annual income
(salary plus cash bonus and/or cash profit sharing) reported is
an R&D Director located in the Atlanta, Ventura County (CA), St.
Louis, Canton/Massillon (OH), Newark/Jersey City, Cincinnati,
Nashville, or Indianapolis metropolitan area or in Ohio,
Nebraska, Oklahoma, or Indiana (but not in one of the major
metropolitan areas studied. This composite individual is
employed by: a chemical & allied products manufacturer; a
consulting firm; a for-profit non-manufacturing organization; a
fabricated metals, rubber & plastics, electrical & electronics
equipment and supplies, or ferrous or non-ferrous metals
producer; a nonprofit contract research center; or a food,
beverage & tobacco or medical & scientific equipment
manufacturer. This individual probably holds a doctorate; works
in the field of biology (excluding genetics); computer science;
ceramic, chemical, civil, electrical/electronics, materials,
mechanical, or sanitary engineering; analytical, organic, or
physical chemistry; pharmacology; or physics (excluding
biophysics); and has had 15 or more years of experience. While
the median R&D Director has a total annual income of $77,400, the
highest-paid individuals in the group make over $250,000.
Far to the other end of the income spectrum, R&D Technicians "C"
(the lowest level of technician) have a median income of $22,800.
Earning as little as $15,250, the composite of the lowest-paid
members of this group are located in the Jackson (MS),
Denver/Boulder, Greensboro/High Point/Winston-Salem, Atlanta,
Charlotte/Gastonia, or Salt Lake City/Ogden/Provo metropolitan
area, or in Ohio, Florida, Texas, or Oklahoma (but not in one of
the major metropolitan areas studied); works for a chemical &
allied product manufacturer, a nonprofit non-manufacturing
organization, an electrical & electronics equipment/supplies
manufacturer, a consulting firm, a nonprofit contract research
center, or a pharmaceutical products manufacturer. He or she
typically has no college education, experience, or supervisory
responsibility. The employees who make up this composite are
assisting in research & development in biology (excluding
