AfterNap Deals in P2P Partners: Offers Partners $600 Million

Minneapolis, MN (April 2, 2001): J. River today revealed an innovative plan to pay $600 million to digital music delivery business partners. The company will pay operators of high-volume servers and other partners for delivering files for AfterNap, its legal, Napster-like service. With proprietary technology already in place, and patents pending, the company seeks to include and compensate organizations and entrepreneurs for content delivery.

The plan will enable legal file trading of quality content, and will create a more efficient delivery system. J. River intends to pay at least $600 million over the next five years to this partner network, and indicates that it could be much more. J. River will use the massive infrastructure of servers and marketers already in place to support the system.

This announcement follows J. River's recent offer to pay record labels at least $3 billion over the next five years for allowing a legal, Napster-like service to launch. Fans, in turn, will be required to sign on as paid AfterNap subscribers. J. River is offering free trial subscriptions.

"The best way to facilitate cooperation in this environment is to offer financial incentives to the key players," says Peter Sohal, J. River's VP of Marketing. "AfterNap will pay the portal, the brick and mortar national retailer, the software developer, the ISP, and even the college student with a large server." The only requirement is that they must agree to abide by the principles of AfterNap, J. River's Web site dedicated to bringing fans and labels together.

J. River is also soliciting software developers. The company has a plug-in solution that allows AfterNap file sharing capabilities to be integrated into a wide array of software products. Developers of AfterNap-enabled applications can benefit economically by becoming partners. The plug-in also handles e-commerce, licensing, and decryption.

AfterNap software is operational now, but won't be released until J. River finalizes discussions with record labels. "We are building a bridge between music fans and the labels," says John Norris, COO. "Today, music fans have no legal way to get the music they want, even though many are willing to pay. As a result, the music industry is losing at least $100 million in revenue each month."
