LAUNCH OF TALKING PICTURES WEBSITE

Today (April 30) the website www.talkingpix.co.uk is officially launched. The site began life in London, England, as Talking Pictures magazine in 1991, and 21 editions were produced before it came online today.

The purpose of Talking Pictures is to provide an intelligent and entertaining view of films, TV, video and mass media in general without being too academic or trivial. We are not primarily concerned with providing a comprehensive view of new releases, instead we carry features about classic movies, TV shows, film/media trends, and comment on what takes our interest.

We are particularly strong on science fiction and horror topics, the site has long features about Nosferatu, 2001: A space Odyssey, TVs Star Trek, Alphaville, fashion in SF movies, etc. We are currently monitoring the progress of Spielbergs current project AI.

Apart from science fiction we carry an article about Girls on Film that derides celebrity and the cult of the image, and we have a piece on The Weakest Link and on the new forms of aggressive TV. We are also strong on reviewing film/TV books, and we want to add useful links that can supplement these texts and inspire deeper research.

The best material from the 21 editions of Talking Pictures will be added to the site along with news items, commentary and several long items about Spielberg and Tarantino. Like the magazine we want to continue to inspire new writers to contribute to our site to share their thoughts and inspire discussion.

Overall the aim of Talking Pictures is to share and offer a greater enjoyment of the media that assaults and dominates our senses in nearly every nook and corner of our lives.

From the site...

On the site we have an article by Nigel Watson, about Woody Allens 1977 movie, Annie Hall. It contains these interesting facts about the movie:

It features these famous faces: Jeff Goldblum, Shelly Hack, Beverly D'Angelo, Paul Simon, Marshall McLuhan.

Eleven-year-old Brooke Shields, and a seventeen-year old Stacey Nelkin were filmed in sequences that were not used in the final version of Annie Hall.

When one of the United Artists executives, Eric Pleskow, heard that Woody wanted to call the film Anhedonia he exclaimed: "You can't be serious." He had to look the word up in a dictionary to find that it meant the inability to enjoy pleasure - the opposite of hedonism.

For the cinema queue scene Woody's first choice was Federico Fellini, when he turned the offer down Luis Bunuel was invited, but he also rebuffed him. In the end Marshall McLuhan agreed to do the scene.
