Agriculture and the Internet Creates a Strong Niche Site WeSellAg.com brought the community together and fulfilled one young mans dream
The Internet and Agriculture comes together when the vision of one man brings his desire and talent together to make WeSellAg.com.
He didnt set foot on a farm until he was 16. Living in less than desirable housing conditions, Jed Wubben knew there had to be better. Visiting his grandfather Raemon in Iowa, he was exposed to the agriculture way of living and that life changing experience is what brought a dream of desire.
When I visited him I saw the prairie and knew it was where I wanted to be. Agriculture brings out the best in the beauty of the land and the fruit of which can be harvested". Says Wubben reflecting on the trip.
He returned home and joined the local 4-H Club where he learned about organization and agriculture. He became so involved in agriculture, he realized there could be more added to the farming community and using his computer skills began focusing on how he could bridge the two.
I knew of situations where 4-Hers were not able to get the right supplies for their projects. Of course there are the family farmers who need to sell their goods. Putting the two together, you have a steady supply and demand within a special community."
So, in November 1999,Wubben launched his site www.WeSellAg.com. An Internet site where farmers, ranchers, and people in the country can post their needs and supplies for direct sales and service. Since the beginning, the site has expanded outside of Colorado, placing needs on a regional basis.
Finding elevators and coffee shops to place flyers out, the word of mouth about WeSellAg.com moved quickly. Today, extension agents and even state agriculture departments use it as a point of reference.
Currently the site offers six categories available for review and posting for anyone with Internet access. A simple form allows Internet users, no matter their electronic savvy, ad posting. Additional information on community events, meetings and the like are available for reading at the communitys convenience.
It is a dream come true," says Wubben looking over the pages on the computer screen. My goal was to help the farmer and hopefully they can continue their way of life. With the response we have had, there is no question they are fighting hard to maintain life on the farm and I am glad to help".
