Controversial SDMI Presentation in Amsterdam at SummerCon 2001, 02 June 2001

Noted Crypto and Digital Watermark Expert Julien Stern will present results of SDMI vulnerability research at SummerCon 2001 in Amsterdam. Citing the Digital Millenium Copyright Act, SDMI blocked a team of Princeton researchers from making a similar presentation.

The Secure Digital Music Initiative (SDMI) is an effort to prevent the illegal distribution of copied digital music. To verify the integrity of the digital watermarking scheme, SMDI challenged the security community to find weaknesses in its technology. In May, SDMI successfully blocked a team of Princeton University researchers who cracked the scheme from publishing their findings.

In potential violation of the Digital Millenium Copyright Act, noted digital watermarking expert Julien Stern will present his paper on vulnerabilities in the SDMI watermarking scheme at SummerCon 2001.

SummerCon 2001 will take place at the Grand Hotel Krasnapolsky in Amsterdam, Netherlands from 01 June -03 June 2001. Other speakers and topics include: Patrick Bagwell and Paul Cunningham, "The Network Is the Virus"; Filip Maertens, "Network Mapping and Host Identification"; Roelof Temmingh, "Practical auditing of HTTP servers"; and Fyodor Yarochkin, "Intrusion Detection Systems."

SummerCon is the oldest of the annual computer security conferences. Its origins are well tied to the early years of Phrack Magazine, a mainstay of the hacker community. More information about SummerCon 2001 is available at www.summercon.org. Members of the media wishing to find out more about SummerCon should send e-mail to media-relations@summercon.org.
