LIBERTARIANS SAY STICK IT" TO CLICK IT OR TICKET"
Libertarian Party of Georgia voices their opposition to the state of Georgia's program of setting up roadblocks and checkpoints to enforce the state seatbelt laws.
Atlanta (PRWEB) June 7, 2001 -- Buckling up may be a wise decision, but the state of Georgias Click It or Ticket" campaign to enforce the seatbelt laws is a clear violation of civil liberties, the Libertarian Party of Georgia said today. The campaign includes a massive crackdown on unbuckled drivers using checkpoints and additional patrols.
We should all be a little scared when the government passes a law that says we are not smart enough to buckle our own seatbelts," said Tom Chernetsky, spokesman for the Libertarian Party of Georgia. Police officers are setting up checkpoints and roadblocks throughout the state to interrogate people who are too foolish to wear a seatbelt," he said. This is just one more example of naïve bureaucratic do-gooders who believe they can legislate common sense."
One admirable goal of the program is to improve compliance with child safety laws. However, the Transportation Department admits that 92% of parents already obey child seatbelt laws without instruction from police officers.
The government nannies are deploying hundreds of officers throughout Georgia, tying up traffic and inconveniencing all motorists, just because a few people are not smart enough to buckle up," stated Chernetsky. Is it too much to ask that our government servants treat us like adults?"
There may be a positive aspect to the states seat belt campaign," said Chernetsky. The fact that these roadblocks and checkpoints are so intrusive may cause Georgians to reconsider their support of such meddlesome 'victimless crime laws and the people who write them."
