NEW WEBSITE SENDS REMINDERS TO YOUR MOBILE PHONE
Anyone who's ever forgotten an appointment will have a new high-tech memory-jogger from this week.
MobileReminder.com, which is being launched on Monday, claims it has found a unique way of linking the internet with mobile phone technology.
The site will be aimed at anyone with access to the internet and a mobile phone capable of receiving text messages. Users can, for example, ask to be called at 3pm on a spouse's birthday, or a couple of hours before a dental appointment. Events can be programmed in for any time in the future, and can be set to recur every so many days, weeks, months as well as annually.
Phone reminders can be set up for any five minute slot throughout the day, with email reminders being sent at 6.00 am local time. The site can handle every time zone, so the potential customer base is worldwide. Requests for people to test the site brought customers from New Zealand, South Africa and Canada, as well as the UK and US.
The service costs $30 per year, and includes 50 free text message reminders. Additional text message reminders cost 15c each. Email reminders are free to subscribers.
MobileReminder is the brainchild of Simon Conroy, a former accountant and financial analyst from York in the UK. He set up the site with no major financial investment, having written all the code himself, and using rental deals with suppliers. Smarthosting, Inc., a US-based web-host provide a dedicated server, and SMS-WAP.com, a Swiss company, supply the text message systems.
"We see this initially as a tool for business people", says Conroy, "but I personally use it for all kinds of non-business things. For example, I often use it to remind myself about social events".
One person even suggested requesting a phone message at 7.00 am on the last Friday of every month, to remind them to wear casual clothes for 'dress-down day' at the office.
Free trials of the service are available at http://www.mobilereminder.com.
