"Interview With Jesus" Continues Hot Web Phenomenon

SILOAM SPRINGS, AR - July 31, 2001 - The summer may have been a dreary one at the box office for Hollywood, but the Internet had plenty of blockbuster movie muscle in the form of a Flash Movie known as "Interview With God." With more than 10 million viewers of the web site and movie since June 1, this ultra low-budget production probably gave all of the big studio hype sites a run for their PR dollars.

Whether it be the big screen or the flat screen, the business of making movies hardly seems to change. This is evidenced by the fact that something like a sequel to "Interview With God" quickly went into production. But, the aim of this new version is meant to be more of an alternative than a follow-up.

The creator of "Interview With Jesus," a greeting card designer for a large card company, wanted to provide a version of the popular original with Jesus Christ specifically being the subject of the interview. According to the movie maker's vision, "Christians look to Jesus as God's 'Answer Man.' He represents God in a person that man can interact with. In our Christian faith, Jesus is the bridge to God, an interview with Jesus is a natural for this kind of thing."

Even though the new version featuring Jesus just went up on its own web page at the end of July, the response has been enthusiastic. Letters are already coming in from all over the United States and traffic from all over the world. Translations into other languages are planned.

The instant success of these movies with an emphasis on God has to be connected with the born-once-again Christian media and its latest explosion into the mainstream. The recent best-selling "Left Behind" book series, "The Prayer of Jabez" devotional book, and the breakout of Christian contemporary music along with the popularity of these Flash inspirationals all signal a hunger in the marketplace for things spiritual.

The use of beautiful photography, subtle and soothing transitions, peaceful words, and folksy, mellow music has its appeal in the simply physical sense as well. A relaxing interlude of a few minutes in a busy day at home or at the office can simply be a stress reliever. When was the last time this could be said about the typical summer "shoot-em-up" flick?
