Amsterdam, the Netherlands, August 1, 2001 - Of all the soccer tournaments across the globe, the World Cup is the one that half the globe turns out to watch. The next clash of soccer's titan's will be fought out across the pitches of Japan and Korea in the 2002 World Cup, brought to you courtesy of Philips - sponsor of the event.
On behalf of Royal Philips Electronics of the Netherlands (AEX: PHI, NYSE: PHG) Gerard Kleisterlee, President and Chief Executive Officer and FIFA president Joseph Blatter today signed the contract that Philips will be an official partner of the 2002 FIFA World Cup Korea/Japan (TM). The full scope of todays agreement between Philips and FIFA also includes sponsorship of the FIFA Womens World Cup 2003 in the Peoples Republic of China.
From the spotlights of the stadiums to the public address systems that cry 'goal' to the pictures on your TV screen, Philips is joining with FIFA to combine the world of technology and the world's favorite game to enhance your viewing pleasure.
Philips has developed several lighting systems especially for this kind of event. In fact, 55% of stadiums worldwide use Philips' lighting systems. These lighting systems cast no shadows, giving players rushing down the field a crisper and clearer vision for their shot on goal.
Lighting from Philips adds to the experience of being in the stands by providing better depth of vision. Fans can see the action in the finest details even on the darkest of nights...and referees are better able to judge that controversial offside call.
With the roar of the jubilant crowds it can be difficult to hear the commentators.
But with Philips' public address systems, fans can hear the magic word, 'gooooal' with an astounding clarity for those in the stands.
And for the billions of fans watching the games across the globe from the comfort of their armchairs, the clearness of the TV picture will be unsurpassed as Philips' stadium lighting products have been specially optimized for broadcasting so you could almost believe you were sitting on the terraces.
