"Joe Six-Pack Delivers a Case of '50-50'

From 'Mixologist' to Philanthropist, Bartender Serves Up New Potion of Patriotism. Founder of The A-to-Z Foundation rallies communities to continue in the spirit of compassion and volunteerism.

Boston, MA, October 1, 2001- We all know the conventional portrayal of the bartender. They offer a friendly ear and dispense little anecdotes of wisdom from behind the bar. But how often do you hear of the bartender who takes his tips on the road and endeavors to solve problems himself?

That is exactly what Marcel Bagley, a bartender from Boston, has done. Bagley established a non-profit organization called The A-to-Z Foundation, and will be traveling the country promoting volunteer service and raising money for issues ranging from 'Aids to Zoos.'

"The American people have been so unbelievable in their generosity through volunteer efforts and financial donations since the events of September 11th," says Bagley. "As an 'ordinary Joe,' I just wanted to do something to continue the momentum of compassion and the sense of community that this country is embracing," says Bagley.

On behalf of The A-to-Z Foundation, Bagley established 'The 50-50 Project,' for which he will attempt to drive to all 50 states within 50 weeks and finish at 'Ground Zero' on September 11, 2002.

With the goal of raising $50,000 in every state, Bagley will donate a check to each state's governor-appointed commission for volunteer and community service which represents more than 700 local and national programs around the country.

The types of organizations for which Bagley wishes to raise money are numerous and diverse, ranging from establishments that fund AIDS research to wildlife conservation agencies. For each letter of the alphabet The A-to-Z Foundation represents a cause or organization for which to raise money and rally community support.

At the end of his trip, Bagley would like to present a check to the U.S. Government as a token of thanks and appreciation. Says Bagley, "This year alone the government has given each of us an extra $300, repeatedly cut interest rates, and a great effort is being made to make our country a safer place to live. That's a pretty generous effort, regardless of one's politics."

Bagley would also like to sponsor an open bar at a tavern near 'Ground Zero' for all the rescue workers and clean-up crews. He says, "For their continuous and tireless efforts, they definitely deserve a few drinks on the house."
