Based in Stuttgart, Germany, the Institute studied 31 international business process-modeling tools. Engineers assessed application design and handling as well as technical capabilities and published their findings in their July, 2001 study, "Business Process Modeling Tools - A Critical Market Survey of Currently Available Tools."
Fraunhofer determined that INCOME Process Designer was the right fit for all industries and highly suited to depict business processes. According to the Institute, "The strengths of the tool lie in its process analysis and optimizing capabilities. These application features are supported effectively by a wide range of analysis and evaluation options, which can be supplemented further by user-defined analyses."

"The strictly consistent use of Java as the programming language throughout means that the INCOME Process Designer can be started locally in an HTML-enabled Web browser. The user can switch from this view to the standard tool view at any time. Especially noteworthy is the ASP [Application Service Providing] variant, which allows the user to model business processes online using data shared via the Internet.
