San Francisco artist Vince Koloski Exhibits Neon-illuminated Artist Books and debuts a Illuminated Crop Circle wall installation at the Los Gatos Museum of Art November 15 - December 29, 2001. The Solo Exhibition entitled "Illuminated Books, Illuminated Walls," will encompass both Galleries of the Museum. One will be devoted to artist books and the other will house the Crop-Circle inspired installation. The Museum is located in Los Gatos at 4 Tait Avenue. The public can visit the exhibition from Wednesday through Sunday from Noon to 4 PM. Admission is Free.
Mr. Koloski has explored light-based work for 24 years. He created his first crop circle installation in 1993 on the Black Rock Desert in Gerlach NV. He has since created works at the SOMAR Gallery, at De Anza College, and, most recently, installed a crop circle piece in the gallery at Hartwick College in Oneonta, NY while serving a stint as visiting artist. The installations have ranged from 10ft. x 30ft. for the smaller works to 80ft. x 135ft. for the large outdoor environmental works. The Los Gatos installation marks the first time he has created a wall mounted piece in this series.
He began his investigations of book-based media in 1993. He created a trio of illuminated text pieces for the "Redefining the Book" exhibition at Braunstein-Quay Gallery in San Francisco in autumn of 1994. Vince has created half a dozen more book work editions since then and has exhibited them throughout the U.S.A. The book pieces all use clear Plexiglas as the page material. The text and images are carved or etched into the Plexiglas and then edge-lighted by neon tubes. The text and images illuminated on the clear plastic pages appear to float in space within structures that are based on the many varieties of book formats and bindings. The early pieces referenced books fairly closely but later pieces have expanded the binding forms to include desks, ammunition boxes and jail bars. His latest work "Imprisoned Words" has been favorably mentioned in two recent "Artweek" Reviews.
The Exhibition "Illuminated Books, Illuminated Walls" runs from November 15 to December 29, 2001. The Los Gatos Museum of Art and Science is located at 4 Tait Avenue in Los Gatos and the Museum is open from Noon to 4 PM Wednesday through Sunday. Admission is free.
