CHATTANOOGA- OCTOBER 5, 2001. The Lula Lake Land Trust, a local conservation organization created to protect the Rock Creek Watershed, announced the launch of the Lula Lake web site created in partnership with Three HD. Bill Chipley, Lula Lake Land Trusts Executive Director needed to have an online resource for information regarding Lula Lakes preservation efforts, scientific research and volunteer opportunities to reach a broader audience. Chipley envisioned the project during conversations with Three HD programmer and Lula Lake volunteer, Jacob Stuart.
For any small non-profit organization, giving our supporters, volunteers, colleagues and the community easy access to information about the Land Trust and our work is critical. Being on-line allows us to serve a number of purposes simultaneously," says Chipley. The site also gives us a way to promote various relationships with educational groups, sponsors and supporters and casually present findings from research with the American Chestnut Foundation and the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. In the future, we would like to add information on our different properties and including species lists, information on habitat types, and new photographs linked to a topographical map or aerial view." Lula Lake Land Trusts web site can be found at www.LulaLake.org and is accessible from any browser.
My first exposure to Lula Lake and Lula Falls was in college as an Environmental Biology major. After school, I got involved with the local branch of the American Chestnut Foundation as they began to look into the land trust for doing a chestnut study. Ive been a volunteer ever since," says Stuart.
After discussions with Chipley and others at Lula Lake, Stuart began designing and implementing the site as part of Three HDs Pro Bono Program. The program allows Three HD to serve the community by donating design and programming work to worthy causes. Applications for the 2002 annual project will be available soon on Three HDs web site and is open to any non-profit community organization. Projects are accepted based on the organizations core values, effectiveness and overall contribution to the community.
The Lula Lake Land Trust began as the fulfillment of the mission of Robert M. Davenport with land donated to the Land Trust at his death in 1994. His vision for restoring land once trampled by clear-cut timber harvesting, garbage dumping and unlimited public access to the beautiful, protected environmental resource enjoyed today is possible thanks to the help of local volunteers and conservationists. The Land Trust works to promote land conservation principles and practices by establishing long-term biological monitoring, encouraging basic and advanced scientific research and inquiry, creating informative educational offerings and working closely with neighboring landowners and the surrounding community to protect the rural and natural character of the landscape.
Since 1996, Three HD has specialized in developing comprehensive business solutions and marketing services utilizing graphic design, Internet technology and multimedia. The firm works in multiple industries and holds national and international awards for technical and design excellence.
