Detroit, MI, September 18, 2001 - Simplewire, a leading wireless messaging infrastructure and software provider, announces the release of support for Nokia's Smart Messaging technology in its SMS Wireless Messaging Platform. The release consists of an upgrade to Simplewire's core Wireless Message Protocol Server technology, as well as the release of version 2.4.0 of its ActiveX and Java SMS Software Development Kits. Both the server and Software Development Kits will now allow users to send ringtones, operator logos, CLI (Caller Line Identifier) icons, picture messages, profiles, and screensavers via SMS to all Nokia phones that currently support Smart Messaging. Support for similar features on other manufactuers' mobile devices, as well as support in other versions of the SMS Software Development Kit will be forthcoming.
Smart Messaging consists of several different features. Ringtones allow the user to send a melody to the phone, while operator logos and CLI Icons involve sending graphics to the phone. These melodies and graphics can then be employed to indicate when a specific person or group is calling the phone, or when the phone is currently being serviced by, or roaming on, a given network. Moreover, a graphic may be used as a screensaver on the mobile device. Smart Messaging also allows users to combine these functions in one message. For example, picture messages allow users to send graphics along with text in a message, while profiles combine ringtones, operator logos, and text all in one message. These capabilities enhance many applications, allowing a business, for instance, to include its logo, jingle, and other information in messages.
Of course, the amount of data necessary to send a Smart Message cannot always be received by the mobile device in just one SMS, due to limitations of the hardware. Thus, a Smart Message may be split into a number of serialized SMS, depending on its size. To account for this, Simplewire offers convenient variable pricing, based on the exact number of SMS needed to deliver the message. This offers an advantage over competitors who often charge a set fee for Smart Messages, costing the user more SMS than were really used.
Smart Messaging is a concept developed by Nokia in 1997, and has become the de facto standard for the industry. Hundreds of millions of Nokia phones with this feature have been delivered to the global market. Meanwhile, Simplewire's SMS Software Development Kit easily embeds into an unlimited spectrum of applications, linking them through Simplewire's Wireless Messaging Network to over 300 networks in 118 countries worldwide. The combination of these technologies allows software developers, businesses, and telecommunications carriers to easily create applications that send not only simple text messages, but the full spectrum of Smart Messaging features. Users may integrate, test and demo Simplewire's platform by joining the free Simplewire Developer Program.
