Native American meets New American
Addison, TX, November 2, 2001 -- Dallas artist Bill Bartee premiers an important new series titled "KIOWA" in Addison on November 2nd. The series combines contemporary ideas about the American Dream with the myths of Kiowa Indians. The combination expresses the artist's mixed racial heritage of European and Native American.
The "KIOWA" series explores the ideas of territorial expansion, the decay of tradition in native and new American life, the identity of the pioneer, and the leadership of warriors. Viewers are asked to reconcile respect for primitive wisdom with the desire for progress. The series references the work of well-known Kiowa art including the Fort Marion artists, a group of warriors imprisoned in 1875, and the Kiowa Five, a group of Kiowa artists who gained influence in the 1920's. Also referenced are the Impressionists, especially Cézanne and Modigliani, and the Social Realists Diego Garcia and José Clemente Orozco.
The opening reception is Friday, November 2nd from 6pm-9pm at Quorum Gallery, 15640 Quorum Drive, in Addison, Texas. The exhibit remains open 11am-5pm Tuesday through Saturday until December 1st. Quorum Gallery is located in Addison Circle, north of Arapaho Road, just west of the Dallas North Tollway.
