FISHING DUO CAST NET FOR BRITISH WEB SHOPPERS WITH TOP QUALITY FRESH CAUGHT SEAFOOD
What with BSE, chemically-injected meat, dodgy chicken and the move towards healthier eating, British food has taken a bit of a beating recently. Despite offering a fresher and healthier alternative, the fishing industry has had its own problems too with European regulations, reduced quotas and so on.
But two guys from the Devon coast, each of them fishermen man and boy, are taking to their boats to bring home the best fish you ever tasted, caught to order and delivered sea-fresh overnight anywhere in mainland UK
John Sanders and Gary Hendriksen both went to sea on leaving school in Brixham to take up a fisherman's life. Nearly 30 years' later, from apprentices to skippers to trawler owners, they have come together to fish for Britain.
"I was at the fish counter in a supermarket one day and was appalled at the quality of the fish on offer. Some of it looked about a fortnight old," says John Sanders.
"It seemed a very sad state of affairs that with three quarters of our fish exported to countries like France, Italy and Spain we can't put decent product on our own plates at home," he adds.
With his growing interest in the internet, this proved a defining moment for John as he hit on the idea of getting consumers' fresh fish orders from a website, putting out his own trawlers and bringing back fish that would set mouths watering at any dinner table.
John got together with his life-long friend, Gary, to establish a fishing fleet of modern trawlers equipped with state of the art refrigeration and ice making facilities to keep the catch extra fresh and a website that would promise the overnight delivery of the freshest fish caught to order, bought online and delivered straight to your doorstep.
You only have to take a peep at their website (www.fresh-fish-online.com)
to get a salty sniff of their romance with the sea and all things natural caught within it. As well as the full price lists for fresh fish, frozen fish, smoked fish, shellfish and speciality fish, there are a whole range of interesting fish recipes, tips on buying and preparation, plus a series of pen portraits on as many varieties of fish and shellfish as you can shake a rod at.
And with prices ranging from medium Dover Soles at only 18 kg to a
1 kg Wild Seabass at 12.95, for example, and delivery charges starting at 7.50 and coming down to free delivery, depending on the size of order, the cost of bespoke fish packed in ice compares very favourably with that made routinely available at your local supermarket or fishmongers.
All this at the press of a keyboard, the end of a freephone call or a fax. Yet you can almost taste that sea spray.
