Rated #1 hill in the Eastern United States by Ski magazine (October 2001), Whiteface boasts the greatest vertical drop east of the Rockies as well as the fastest heated gondola in North America. The mountains 72 trails, which include a new Federation of International Skiing (FIS)-approved race trail, offer skiers and snowboarders enough variety to satisfy all abilities. Of historic interest, it is the only ski area in the East ever to host the Olympic Winter Games. Its also a great place to learn to ski thanks to a trademarked program called Parallel from the Start. About 20 area hotels, motels, and inns are participating in the Lake Placid/Whiteface "Ski & Stay" promotion which runs from December 2001 through the close of the winter season.
