Rated #1 hill in the Eastern United States by Ski magazine (October 2001), Whiteface boasts the greatest vertical drop east of the Rockies as well as the fastest heated gondola in North America. The mountains 72 trails, which include a new Federation of International Skiing (FIS)-approved race trail, offer skiers and snowboarders enough variety to satisfy all abilities. Of historic interest, it is the only ski area in the East ever to host the Olympic Winter Games. Its also a great place to learn to ski thanks to a trademarked program called Parallel from the Start. About 20 area hotels, motels, and inns are participating in the Lake Placid/Whiteface "Ski & Stay" promotion which runs from December 2001 through the close of the winter season. The midweek package rate is based on double occupancy with a two-night minimum and is subject to availability. Cross-country "Ski & Stay" packages and one-night "Ski & Stay" packages are also available. Early reservations are strongly recommended.
Located in the heart of the Adirondack Park, the Lake Placid/Whiteface Region is easily accessible by car from Boston, New York City and Buffalo as well as the New England and Mid-Atlantic states and provinces of Quebec and Ontario. Travel options include air transportation to one of three major airports: Albany, New York; Burlington, Vermont; and Montreal, Quebec. All are serviced by major airline carriers and have car rentals available. Amtrak train service to Westport (40 miles from Lake Placid) is also available.
