This year we are honoring Walter Cronkite, Margaret Fung, and Frederick A. O. Schwarz, Jr. for their role in the fight for good government. Special guest Andy Rooney. Plus, there will be jazz, drinks, and hors d'oeuvre.

On Friday, November 9, 2001 Common Cause/NY will celebrate its fourth annual I Love an Ethical New York event, honoring citizens who are making a difference in the fight for good government. In response to the attack on the World Trade Center, Father Joseph A. OHare, Chairman of the NYC Campaign Finance Board, will offer a moment of remembrance for the victims and for all those touched by the tragedies on September 11.

Common Cause/NY will also offer a special salute to the elected officials, city agencies, non-profits, and NYC voters whose perseverance and commitment resulted in a relatively smooth primary election and the highest primary turnout since 1989, despite extraordinary obstacles.

The Host Committee supporting the event includes President JImmy Carter, President Gerald R. Ford, Larry Rockefeller, and Derek Bok. Andy Rooney will attend the event as a special guest.    

Walter Cronkite will be honored as a model of lifelong deep engagement in the social and political process. In particular, he will be recognized for his recent work with the Alliance for Better Campaigns, promoting network responsibility and campaign finance reform in the form of free television time for candidates.

Margaret Fung, executive director of the Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund, also will be honored. Throughout her career, Ms. Fung has championed electoral reform and helped tens of thousands of Asian Americans gain a greater ability to exercise their right to vote. Her efforts led to the first fully translated Chinese-language ballots in New York City.

Frederick A. O. Schwarz, Jr. will be honored for his career of dedication to good government. New Yorkers prize him for his role in shaping the New York City Charter revision of 1988, his help in realizing New York City's nationally recognized public campaign financing system, and his continued commitment to protecting and strengthening these reforms. Mr. Schwarz is a partner at Cravath, Swaine & Moore and former Corporation Counsel under Mayor Ed Koch.

Speakers will include Common Cause president Scott Harshbarger and others to be announced. Proceeds from the event will benefit Common Cause/NY. The event is open to the public and will be held from 6:00 to 8:30 p.m. at the National Arts Club, located at 15 Gramercy Park South (between Park Avenue South and Third Avenue).
