Classic Songwriter More Sunny Than Blue About New Release
Jack Segal, legendary songwriter of "When Sunny Gets Blue", "Scarlet Ribbons", "When Joanna Loved Me", and others has just released his own "first album." A perspective, from the songwriter, performing the songs as he wrote them and meant for them to be heard, this long overdue CD is a songwriter treat.
The CD's title? "When Sunny Gets Blue, Scarlet Ribbons, And Other Songs I Wrote" -- a sort of witty humor, much as the final song on the album, "Bye-Bye Barbara" (co-written with Paul Vance.) That same humor says via lyric to Barbara, "Since you are what you are you will not very long be alone." Subtly slyly funny.
The production on the album has a nice mix of textures. The more well known "Sunny" (co-written with Marvin Fisher) and "Scarlet" (co-written with Evelyn Danzig) are more orchestrated, with full arrangements -- whereas "What Are You Afraid Of?" and "Here's To The Losers" (co-writer Bob Wells) are done with stand-up bass and light drums, trio style. There are even a couple of the songs with Jack and the piano, alone -- and the song "I Keep Goin' Back To Joe's" is fabulous in this bare-bones style.
"This is a little piece of music history," says producer Janet Fisher, "And I am so proud to be able to have such great songs to work with. What fun I had!"
