"New Cable Channel Targets African Immigrants in the U.S."
New cable channel launches geared towards African Immigrants who live in the U.S.
DAVENPORT, IOWA. Nov 2001- A new cable TV channel called the "African
TV Network" has been launched to give African Immigrants residing in
the U.S. a way to keep in touch with their homeland. The channel will
begin broadcasting in July of 2002 and transmit programming of interest
to African Immigrants 24 hours a day 7 days a week via Cable T.V/Satellite
out of New York.
Thousands of African Immigrants come to this country every year.
According to the Office of Immigration & Naturalization one million
immigrants enter the U.S. annually. In 1999, 20,401 naturalizations
were done on immigrants from African Nations. Also, that same year
405,320 African citizens were admitted into the country on temporary
visas (students, travel, etc.) They come to the U.S. for a variety
of reasons; some for an education, political oppression, business,
or seeking refuge from worn torn countries.
Some African Immigrants enter the country with plans to stay temporarily
and eventually move back "home." Those who choose to become permanent
residents feel very strongly about keeping ties with relatives and
their culture, for themselves and their children. Tradition and
community are important to most people, and Immigrants from African
nations are no exception. They have a strong commitment to collecting
and preserving their culture and "way of life."
The "African TV Network" is the brainstorm of Clement Afforo, who
immigrated to the United States from Ghana as a teenager in 1975.
"The American Press doesn't cover the African Nation in depth,
many times only showing the ugly side of war and tragedy," Mr.
Afforo stated. "There are currently no channels geared specifically
to African Immigrants so this broadcast will cater to the needs,
events and cultural aspects of the African Nation as well as
carrying educational programming from the continent of Africa."
The number of African Immigrants entering the U.S. annually is
growing so there's definitely a need for this type of
broadcasting so they can stay in touch with their motherland
and maintain their "roots." The types of programs aired will
consist of news, sports, movies, music, entertainment and sitcoms.
The owner of African TV Network is presently looking for investors
as well.
