Two Revolutionary Varicose Vein Treatments Bring New Hope to Sufferers

Orlando, FL – December 17, 2001 – For decades, millions of varicose vein sufferers have chosen to live with their condition rather than undergo painful vein stripping" surgery. Now, two alternative procedures—Ultrasound-Guided Foam Sclerotherapy and Microphlebectomy—are changing the face of varicose vein treatment and giving new hope to many who thought shorts and skirts were a part of their past.

Ultrasound-Guided Foam Sclerotherapy is similar to traditional sclerotherapy used for spider veins, but this new procedure is effective for varicose veins. The major difference is that a foam-like medication rather than a liquid is injected into the veins. The foam makes better contact with the inside of the vein wall and stays in the vein longer, thereby optimizing results. Foam sclerotherapy is performed while monitoring the vein on an ultrasound screen. This allows for accurate placement of the medication into the diseased deeper veins that often leak and feed into the bulging surface veins.

The second alternative treatment, Microphlebectomy, is a minimally-invasive method for removing varicose veins. The procedure requires only local anesthesia and no there is no hospitalization. Using special instruments, the veins are gently removed through tiny skin openings about the size of a pinhead. Unlike vein stripping, no stitches are needed and virtually no scarring occurs with Microphlebectomy. The results are quick and cosmetically pleasing. There is relatively no downtime and discomfort is minimal.

Both Ultrasound-Guided Foam Sclerotherapy and Microphlebectomy treatments are available at the Vascular Center of Orlando, which has been a worldwide leader in the advanced treatment of varicose veins since 1978. With over 35 years of combined experience in vein care, the Centers Dr. Daniel Thomas, who is certified by the American Board of Sclerotherapy, and Dr. Samuel Martin, a board-certified vascular surgeon, offer free screenings to their patients to help determine which treatment is best for their problem veins.
