Energy Deregulation vs. Telecommunications Deregulation

Killeen, Texas -- January 5, 2002 -- It has become common practice for telecommunications providers to contact consumers via mail or telephone in an effort to have them switch their telephone services. Rebate checks are paid in amounts of up to $125 in some cases. Many individuals take advantage of this free money by switching services every few weeks! What kind of impact does this have on the telecommunications industry? Who ends up footing the bill for all of those rebates? You do, the consumer! You end up paying it all back in transfer fees, and cancellation fees, and any other fees that can be attached to your bill.

Will electricity and gas companies use this same technique to lure customers in? Not likely, according to the experts. It is illegal for Retail Electric Providers (REPs) to offer any form of 'kickback for utilizing their services. With the end of the Pilot Program getting closer, Texas residents will experience a rush of competition when Deregulation takes full effect during the early part of 2002. Beware of spammers" switching your services without your consent.

If TXU and Reliant customers do not make a decision themselves prior to the end of the Pilot Program, they will be automatically switched to a new REP to make the playing field fair for all newcomers. New Power has committed to beat all competitors with a new 7.1 cent per kilowatt hour guaranteed rate for the duration of 1 year, depending on chosen contract. There are no add-on fees other than a $6.95 monthly service charge. Consumers wishing not to be contacted can request that they be added to a Do Not Call List."
