Stork Avenue, largest birth announcement company in the US, releases the most popular names of 2001 and predictions for 2002.

Coral Gables, FL—Stork Avenue, one of Americas largest mail order birth announcement companies (www.StorkAvenue.com), has released their list of the most popular names of 2001. The top five names for boy babies born during 2001 were: Jacob, Michael, Joshua, Matthew and Andrew. The top names for female babies included: Emily, Hannah, Madison, Samantha and Ashley.

The list, comprised of Social Security Agency application data through August, 2001 and names announced on birth announcements furnished by Stork Avenue (as of this date), showed some notable differences across the United States.

Madison is a very popular girls name in Western states while Hannah is popular in Southern states," said Bob Hunter, Stork Avenues president. Boys named William increased in Southern states in 2001, while Michaels are most popular in Northern states."

Many companies use the Social Security Agencys most popular names" as their year-end benchmark, but their data only captures names through August 31st each year and is a 1% sample," he said. Ours is three times larger than the Social Securitys sample, so we have a more accurate data."

The company also tracks trends through the end of each year, as well as 4th quarter names, to predict the following years hot names."
