Evangelistic Church of God in Christ presents Building a Bridge of Hope". Grammy Award Winners Mary Mary, one of gospel musics premiere groups, will be featured Sunday, April 8, 2001 in a benefit concert at the Wilshire Ebell Theatre in Los Angeles. Mary Mary, whose album Thankful" has been certified gold; has won a Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Soul Gospel Album; four Stellar Awards; a Lady of Soul Award, is currently nominated for two Soul Train Music Awards and is the #3 Top Gospel Album in the country (source: Billboard Magazine). Their single Shackles, which peaked at No. 4 on the national R&B charts and vaulted into the Top 10 in England was the one of the most added singles on R&B and Gospel radio stations when it debuted in April, 2000. This sister act has found a sound that is appealing to mainstream while sharing a ministry that appeals to Christian audiences." (review: Musicforce.com)
The purpose of this concert will be to benefit Evangelistics drive to build a development center and learning lab for the children in the surrounding community. Located in one of the poorest areas of Los Angeles, Evangelistics goal is to provide the local children with a clean, safe atmosphere in which to learn how to serve the community, how to be responsible and honest, how to apply themselves in school, and how to incorporate faith into their daily lives. In addition they would also like to offer computer training, math, reading and science tutoring, and talent development.
During last years Sisters in the Spirit tour that also featured Yolanda Adams and gospel legend Shirley Caesar, Mary Mary played to over flowing crowds at venues across the nation. Their performance said a NetRadio review, "... made an immediate, and lasting impression with their energy, soaring harmonies, and fine individual voices...a powerful reading of "Shackles" that had thousands on their feet, swaying and singing along." Joining, Mary Mary for this benefit concert will be top selling gospel artist Vanessa Bell Armstrong, several surprise celebrity guests and local standouts Evangelistic Mass Choir and The Craig Family.
