Retirement is not a Requirement to Travel Full-time
Many too young to retire are trading in the American Dream to travel full-time in RVs. Weary of careers or stuff" ruling their lives, they are enjoying the beauty of our country and meeting its people at their own pace.
The Recreational Vehicle Industry Association estimates there are 1 million to 1.5 million full-timers on the road today. This is more than the population of at least eight states! While no one knows how many of these full-timers have yet to reach retirement age, indicators show rapid growth in this segment of full-timers:
· Since 1996 the Boomers BOF, a subgroup of the Escapees RV Club, has tripled in size.
· Discovery Civilization is airing a series called Ties That Bind this spring. A segment of this series looks at the lifestyle young full-timers lead.
· In April 2001 NHK of Japan will be filming a documentary on the full-timing lifestyle for Japanese Public TV. Young full-timers will be a major focus of this documentary.
· Take Back Your Life! Travel Full-Time In An RV by full-timer Stephanie Bernhagen is the first book on full-timing that addresses the needs of young full-timers. Released in June 2000, it became #1 Most Popular in Iowa" at Amazon.com the same month and went to reprint in just four months.
This lifestyle is attainable for almost anyone with a wanderlust spirit, as they need not have money in the bank to enjoy it. At least 40 percent of those on the road live comfortably for less than $1,500 a month. Short-term jobs are abundant and most find they only need to work a few months of the year to afford the full-timing lifestyle.
Young full-timers hold the key to many interesting stories, which might focus on topics such as:
· Why are those too young to retire giving up the American Dream and hitting the road?
· How are they able to afford the lifestyle?
· Can families with kids or those with disabilities enjoy full-timing?
· Is living full-time in an RV an affordable alternative to home ownership?
· Are young full-timers energy hogs or conservationists? (Californians could learn a lot from many of these folks right now.)
· How do these folks contribute to society?
