Philippine digital artists on GEO/CENTR/E/I/CITY - The Earth as Center
Geo/centr/e/i/city presents seven digital artists from the Philippines and their take on the geological sciences to interpret and visualize earth phenomena.
GEO/CENTR/E/I/CITY - Earth a.k.a. the Middleworld, takes center stage as the Philippines' top and emerging digital artists talk with scientists at the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology, and fuse island folklore to mount an online exhibition of the many faces, languages and voices of the savage earth.
The focus on earth phenomena have special meaning to many of the artists in the exhibition. Al Manrique, who holds a degree in Architecture, has had to deal with earthquakes in building construction and has done work in remote island locations prone to volcanic activity. Ferdinand Doctolero has depicted Philippine myths and used maps in many previous works, especially when his four-year old son Uriel
showed enthusiasm and prodigious interest in maps and geography. Joey Ong's obsession with fault lines is triggered by his living along an affected area. For Fatima Lasay, interest in the predictive behaviour of animals and humans towards earthquakes come from personal experience, while John Flores looks into how indigenous communities forecast natural disasters. Archie Degamo works toward a rendition of the volcano as king. And for Aileen Familara, a persistent interest in Chinese seismographs and fengshui paraphernalia mark her works in the exhibition.
GEO/CENTR/E/I/CITY - The Earth as Center is a Hoydigiteer.org initiative with support from the Internet's longest running art-technology news service, fineArt Forum, and in collaboration with Phivolcs. GEO/CENTR/E/I/CITY is accessible thru http://www.fineartforum.org/Gallery/2001/geocentricity/
