WhiteStar Announces July Release of OrthoStar
Custom Digital Image Base for Business and Industry

   DENVER -- The WhiteStar Corporation has announced a July 1, 2001, release of its OrthoStar Compressed Digital Imagery Database for business, industry, and government. The OrthoStar product consists of more than 150,000 black and white aerial photographic quarter quadrangles produced by the USGS. OrthoStar quarter quads, each covering approximately 15 square miles, are available for more than 80 percent of the Continental United States at a resolution of one meter, with imagery vintage ranging from 1992 through the present time. OrthoStar is constantly updated as new imagery becomes available.

   OrthoStar imagery is available in geo-referenced Mr. SID® image format. This image compression technology from Lizardtech of Seattle, Washington, reduces the original 50-megabyte file size to approximately two megabytes per quarter quadrangle without sacrificing image quality. The resulting files, which have been logically and consistently renamed, are more manageable and can be used with virtually any GIS system capable of displaying compressed raster imagery data in Mr. SID format, including Environmental System Research Institutes ArcView and ARC/INFO product lines, as well as MapInfo."

   Because OrthoStar imagery consists of aerial photographs processed to have the properties of a map, it is possible to overlay other map data, such as digital land grid data and corporate assets such as pipelines, oil and gas wells, timber stands, etc. OrthoStar is an excellent base map and a valuable tool for the revision and interpretation of vector cartographic features.
