Miss Caripeg Pageant Comes to Club Regent Hotel and Casino in a Mardi Gras Style
Miss Caripeg kicks off with gala pageant at Club Regent Casino in Winnipeg, Manitoba on June 23, 2001. The Caripeg Carnival Committee is a non-profit organization that brings the true Caribbean style of Mardi Gras to the streets of Winnipeg in Western Canada. The event is a kaleidoscope of color and pageantry reminiscent of the Carnival that Trinidad and Tobago is noted for at Mardi Gras.
To kick-off this year's Caripeg Carnival festivities, a grand pageant will be held at Club Regent Hotel and Casino on June 23, 2001. Adding more zest and glamour to this occasion, the Caripeg Carnival Committee has asked two popular Caribbean performers to be part of the show.
Mc/Entertainer Tony Hatt will take you through the show with the rich cultural combination of Pageant and Carnival with his Caribbean humor like nobody else does. His quick wit and a well of humor reaches into the innermost crevices of his audiences and produces a unique, sweetness that blends any age group of any race or religion into a oneness - common ground - laughter
The Committee's head is June Springer and she brings to the show her experience in staging many of the entertainment packages that we have seen in Winnipeg over the years. This colorful show will include high energy drumming and dancing by Caribbean, African and East Indian dance groups comparable to the electrifying shows held during Carnival in the Caribbean.
Entertaining the expected sold out crowd will be Charles Thorne Olivier the singer whose hits in calypso and soca have produced many a hand waving and rallying call to "jump and wave". On this night, Charles will be the soloist as he serenades the ladies.
Six charming young ladies will compete for this prestigious title with the winner to serve as both Carnival Ambassador and Grand Marshal for the "Caribbean Style" Mardi Gras parade on Saturday, August 11th.
Today, more than ever we support the wholesomeness, educational goals and personal achievements of our young women encouraging them to preserve the pride of their roots and their native customs.
The Miss Caripeg Pageant is open to young women of all ethnic background between the ages of eighteen to twenty-five. On the evening of June 23, the Pageant will display the multicultural mosaic of Canada in a contest of composure, talent, knowledge of Carnival and self-confidence, making the contestants aware that there is far more to the pageant than a crown, banner, roses, and walking down a runway.
The pageant provides them with personal and intellectual growth as well as exposure to a Mardi Gras Carnival giving them the opportunity to display a highly crafted carnival costume with all the exuberance of Mardi Gras.
The six contestants are: Alicia Edwards (Dino's Grocery Mart), Barbara Deen (Island Vibes), Natalie Rodriquez (Michael Silver), Sharon Sathi (Hispanic Dance Theatre), Shauna Jagessar (Winnipeg Cash Register), Vidika Mulchan (Guyanese Association of Manitoba).
The evening of entertainment will commence at 7:00 p.m. and admission is $20.00.
With Mardi Gras in the air, the night will continue with the sweet pulsating sounds of Caribbean music as you dance away in the early hours of the morning Carnival style.
