The Boston Globe to debut new Travel Section on Sunday, October 7
New England's largest newspaper, The Boston Globe, will present a new, revamped Travel Section on Sunday October 7.
New Englands largest newspaper continues its editorial improvements
Boston -- July 17 -- The Boston Globe said today that it will begin publishing a new, expanded Travel section as part of the Boston Sunday Globe, with its premier issue appearing on October 7. The announcement was made by Globe Publisher Richard H. Gilman.
"The New England region is a four-season attraction for both travelers from home and abroad," said Gilman. "We're proud to offer a premiere Travel section that is tuned to their needs and interests. The section will provide expanded information on national and international travel. And graced as we are that our region offers so many inviting destinations so close at hand, we intend to become the number one source about travel in New England."
According to the Massachusetts Office of Travel and Tourism, travel and tourism is the states third largest industry, with estimates of $12 billion in revenue and 27 million visitors annually. Those numbers jump markedly when the five other New England states are taken into account.
Globe advertisers will benefit from a major change in how the section is distributed. The section will be simultaneously distributed in the Worcester Telegram & Gazette, part of The New York Times Companys New England Newspaper Group along with The Boston Globe. The combined newspaper distribution thus gives travel, tourism, and hospitality advertisers one-stop access to more than 2.1 million readers every week in all of eastern Massachusetts: approximately 1.8 million Globe readers and an additional 300,000 Telegram & Gazette readers.
Bruce Bennett, publisher of the Worcester Telegram & Gazette, is enthusiastic about the new collaboration, which continues an effort that began this spring with the Globe 100 business section, featuring the top public companies in Massachusetts. The Globe 100 section was published in both newspapers.
"The Telegram & Gazette looks forward to adopting the Globe Sunday travel section," said Bennett. "And especially so with these enhancements. Worcester citizens are enthusiastic travelers. This will give our readers much more destination information and many more great travel deals."
Readers will benefit through an entirely new look, with a complete redesign and more content. The Travel section will contain consumer features, practical planning tips, advice on books and equipment, guides to travel web sites, updates on Bostons Logan Airport, and a weekly two-page spread color feature. For specific destinations, "If You Go" (IYG) boxes will provide travelers with essential information on weather, exchanges rates on currency, nightlife, dining, lodging, shopping, and special events.
It will also feature N.E. Travel -- a section within a section -- focusing exclusively on travel and tourism throughout the six New England states.
The printed section will be further enhanced through synergy with the Globes Website, Boston.com, the number one regional portal for news and information about the region. Boston.coms travel section will also be redesigned and provide expanded content as well, including searchable archives, photo galleries, printable IYG boxes, listings for New England events and festivals, reader contests, and chats with Globe writers.
The Globes new Travel section is yet another major editorial improvement in a long list of improvements the paper has made within the last year. Last fall, the paper debuted a complete graphic redesign; added business coverage in technology and biotechnology; expanded suburban news coverage with Globe West reaching 37 communities on Thursdays and Sundays; improved its Thursday Life at Home and classified Marketplace sections, both of which contain zoned sections for local advertisers; and began a new Sunday help wanted section called BostonWorks with editorial content on jobs, careers, and the workplace.
And in early September, the Globe will add to its local coverage with the second of its Thursday-Sunday suburban sections, as Globe South will begin publishing, covering 48 communities south of Boston.
The Boston Globe, New Englands largest circulation newspaper and one of the nations top 15 daily and top 10 Sunday papers, and the Worcester Telegram & Gazette are wholly-owned subsidiaries of The New York Times Company (NYSE:NYT), a leading media company with 2000 revenues of $3.5 billion.
The Company publishes The New York Times, The Boston Globe and 15 other newspapers; owns eight network-affiliated television stations and two New York radio stations; and has more than 40 Web sites, including NYTimes.com and Boston.com. In 2001 the Company was ranked No. 1 in the publishing industry in Fortune's list of America's Most Admired Companies. In October 2000 the Company was ranked No. 1 in the publishing industry in Fortune's survey of the Global Most Admired Companies. The Companys core purpose is to enhance society by creating, collecting and distributing high-quality news, information and entertainment.
