Teams are now being formed for the third annual Walk for Awareness: Our
Fight Against Breast Cancer to begin in Mackay Park in Englewood, New
Jersey on Sunday, October 14 at 1 PM.
Any group of individuals eager to join in the fight against breast cancer can form a team. Walk as a team with your co-workers, family, friends, civic group, professional organization, union, religious group, or place of worship. Walking as part of a team can add to the fun and excitement of participating. A prize will be awarded to each member of the team that raises the most money.
The only requirement for a team is that it include a minimum of four (4) walkers. Each team designates a team captain and decides on a team name. Each team member will receive a hat as well as a WFA T-shirt on the day of the Walk. Teams will walk with a poster displaying the team name and a team photo will be taken the day of the Walk.
Completed pre-registration forms and the $10 registration fee should be collected from each team member by October 5. Registration is $15 the day of the Walk. Team members can solicit their own sponsors. Paid donations can be mailed in before the Walk or brought in that day. Only paid donations received by the day of the Walk will count toward the team competition. All checks should be made payable to the WFA/EHMC Foundation.
The Walk for Awareness: Our Fight Against Breast Cancer will benefit The Breast Care Center at Englewood Hospital and Medical Center. Proceeds from the Walk, which raised $180,000 in its first two years, will go toward funding mammograms for uninsured and underinsured women, subsidizing genetic counseling and genetic testing for eligible women at risk of developing hereditary breast cancer, and toward the purchase of a state-of-the-art R2 Image Checker, a machine that will enhance The Breast Care Center's diagnostic capabilities. The R2 Image Checker digitizes the mammographic image and runs it against a database of cancers, providing the radiologist with a second opinion.
Englewood's Mayor Paul Fader and his wife Jill, who serve as co-chairs, started the Walk in 1999. Mrs. Fader underwent successful treatment for breast cancer after early diagnosis at The Breast Care Center. She is a dedicated proponent of early detection in the fight against breast cancer. The Walk is expected to attract a record number of participants, and organizers are "planning" on a beautiful autumn day.
