New York, NY -- August 8, 2001 -- Music industry e-Journal, MusicDish, today announced the launch of a new songwriting section on the heels of its release of "Songwriters in the New Millennium," a twin e-report series with contributions from some of the leading members of the community. The section, titled 'SongWork', will feature articles, interviews and commentary that will seek to bridge the gap between various sectors of the songwriting industry. It was also announced that Anne Freeman, who has served as the volunteer coordinator of the Princeton, NJ Chapter of NSAI, joins MusicDish as an Associate Editor for 'SongWork'. The section will begin by featuring excerpts from "Songwriters in the New Millennium."
"Working on 'Songwriters in the New Millennium' and with the report authors made it apparent that many of the issues raised, such as differences between male & female songwriters, perceptions of how the industry is serving them and the role of the Internet, needed a forum for further discussion and debate," explained Eric de Fontenay, Project Director for "Songwriters in the New Millennium" and Tag It CEO.
"For too long, the focus of the music industry has been on the travails of musicians and labels as they adjust to the challenges of an digital economy," commented Sounni de Fontenay, MusicDish Editor-in-Chief & Tag It COO. "This has often been to the detriment of the fostering of a real debate on the unique issues faced by the songwriting community. This was the impetus that led MusicDish to publish 'Songwriters in the New Millennium' and now launch a new section dedicated to this powerful community."
"I am delighted to be a part of this new addition to MusicDish, 'SongWork'," stated Anne Freeman. "It will provide an opportunity to present critical information, discussion and debate regarding the music industry as it uniquely pertains to the songwriting community. My concern that many songwriters, and aspiring songwriters in particular, have been too isolated from the far-reaching changes taking place in the music industry was confirmed by the survey. 'SongWork' will provide an opportunity to highlight those issues and inform the songwriting community of the many resources and service providers available to help them with their careers, many of which were highlighted in the survey and the report essays."
The "Songwriters in the New Millennium" report series is based on an online survey conducted this past spring of 584 songwriters on their perceptions of the organizations and activities that have traditionally supported them. The reports feature contributions by leading members of the community such as Dean Kay (ASCAP), J.W. Johnson (BMI), Allen Foster (The Songwriter's Monthly), Mark Schulz (NARAS) and David Michael Thomas (NSAI) and others who have dedicated their careers to working with songwriters and the craft.
