SILENT JUSTICE: The Clarence Thomas Story
To be released on the 10th anniversary of the confirmation hearings.
On December 8th, 2000 Clarence Thomas was once again thrust back into the
center of the American political spotlight —this time his opinion would be one that
would elect the president.
Silent Justice is the definitive biography of Clarence Thomas; the enigmatic figure
that has been called both a "goateed radical" and more recently an "Uncle Tom
Conservative." His attitude toward women became the focus of a maelstrom of
debate ten years ago when he was nominated for his seat on the nations highest
court.
It recounts his growing up poor in Pin Point, GA, and his conservative Catholic
upbringing. This book illustrates the conflicts regarding race that he faced at an
early age, shaping his personal and political philosophy forever. Tracing his political
career, Silent Justice contains extensive research on his education and experience
prior to his nomination. It shows how his struggle to be "as good as white"
ostracized him from the black liberal community, as racism has often left him
alienated from whites. This conflict has always been central to his persona and it
continues to affect his opinions -- evidenced by his stance against affirmative action.
Greenya has written the first book to investigate Thomas below the surface and
beyond the Anita Hill trials. For this book, he has conducted numerous personal
interviews with Thomas's friends and foes, including his first boss in Washington,
Senator John Danforth, and Barry Maddox, the video store owner who rented
Clarence Thomas pornographic tapes. Ultimately, Silent Justice does a superb job
of connecting the circumstances of Thomas's life with the political impact he has had
on this country. (Published by Barricade Books)
