Proponent Software announced that it has agreed to provide its Instant Prototyping software and related consulting services to City of Hope National Medical Center in connection with a clinical research database project sponsored by the National Institutes of Health.

Clinical trials are complex disease treatment guidelines characterized by numerous data elements that describe how individuals respond to therapeutic interventions ranging from chemotherapy to radiation to surgery. To support City of Hopes disease research programs, its Division of Information Sciences has pioneered the development of advanced clinical research databases. Based on its established domain leadership, City of Hope was awarded a National Institutes of Health grant in early 2001 to develop information management standards and technologies for cancer diagnosis and treatment.

The resulting database and applications will be accessed by clinical research institutes nationwide, and is expected to provide a standard and model of excellence in this important area of medical informatics. City of Hopes collaborators include healthcare informatics experts from the Los Alamos National Laboratorys Advanced Computing Lab, along with domain experts from the University of Southern California and Childrens Hospital of Los Angeles.

Project leader, Joyce C. Niland, Ph.D., Chair of City of Hopes Division of Information Sciences, noted, We are very excited about Proponent Softwares involvement in this project. In a very short time, the Proponent approach has enabled our team to resolve significant database design issues and validate our emerging data model. Prior to adopting Proponents Instant Prototyping technology, we seemed to be reaching the limitations of conventional methods."
