PC and Laptop users to benefit from pioneering knowledge management tool

9 January 2002: Knowledge Management Software (KMS) plc launches Desktop KnowledgeTM, the latest addition to its portfolio of knowledge management software solutions.

Desktop Knowledge is the only Knowledge Management and personal productivity tool that allows users to simultaneously retrieve varied unstructured information from their PC/laptop as well as from their corporate portal or Internet portal.

As increasingly more information is pushed to us through a variety of channels, the ability to rapidly find relevant information without laboriously searching becomes ever more important in maintaining personal productivity levels.

Research can take up to 20% of a professionals working day so in order to stay competitive, organisations need to automate the way their employees work, communicate and collaborate. [Source: IRN] Otherwise known as, the 'knowledge deficit, this metric captures the cost of inefficiencies that result primarily from intellectual rework, sub standard performance and an inability to find knowledge resources is the term that has come to define the issues facing the industry today*.

David Burns, Chief Technology Office at KMS comments, The figures speak for themselves. European businesses are currently losing $450 billion per annum, the cost incurred through the 'knowledge deficit." IDC states that only 15% of European companies have begun to address this issue.

He continues, In order to stay competitive, organisations have to automate the way their employees communicate and collaborate. The industry needs an affordable solution that will free up employees valuable time and resource."

Desktop Knowledge automatically creates a knowledge base of all Office documents, PowerPoint presentations, Excel spreadsheets, Outlook files and HTML documents on the computer and provides a simple to use, natural language interface to enable the user to locate the information they require. The user can then search the Internet or their corporate portal and their desktop simultaneously, a feature unique to Desktop Knowledge.

Desktop Knowledge is powered by KMSs neural networking and natural language processing technologies, enabling users to pose questions to the knowledge base in their own 'natural language, i.e. normal English sentences, and provides appropriate intelligently formulated responses ranked in order of contextual relevance to the question asked. When the user confirms the correct answer Desktop learns and becomes even more accurate.

Desktop Knowledge brings together all related PC documents, emails and web content in one place ready for display or editing. The user can escalate any unresolved queries with one click to the Internet, dramatically improving productivity for users.

With the vast amount of information at PC users fingers, the demand for a software tool that can maximise this knowledge is enormous," said Dave Rosalski, Chief Executive Officer of KMS. Information overload is a real problem for individual users but Desktop Knowledge meets this challenge by delivering the superior levels of 'knowledge management normally only found in much larger departmental solutions."
