Institute Founded to Educate "Young Global Citizens"

The Simon and Barklee Institute for Young Global Citizens has been founded to provide innovative ways for children around the world to learn about and communicate with each other through books, activities and communications technology.

A new organization to help children worldwide discover how their global neighbors has been established with the formation of a Whidbey Island, WA non-profit foundation.
The Simon and Barklee Institute for Young Global Citizens has been founded to provide innovative ways for children around the world to learn about and communicate with each other through books, activities and communications technology.
Catherine W. Scherer, president of Simon and Barklee, Inc., a sister for-profit company, said the tandem organizations bring the world home to children by providing international educational programs and services.
Simon and Barklee, Inc., also of Whidbey Island, publish a series of multidisciplinary adventure books for elementary school children. The series, Another Country Calling . . the Adventures of Simon and Barklee, features two whimsical, globe-trotting animal characters who serve as a catalyst for understanding the diverse cultures of a complex world.
Scherer said the Institute will create and manage a series of programs, using technology, traditional learning materials and exchanges to meet its goal. Recipients of the institute grants and published materials will be schools, educators, and children domestically and internationally. The institute, she added, will key on shaping todays young thinkers by providing innovative and educational ways for children and educators around the globe to connect with each other person to person and classroom to classroom.
Scherer said the Simon and Barklee Institute for Young Global Citizens will seek participation of high-profile individuals whose public statements indicate a dedication to education and specifically to the concept of global citizenship.
