Howard Terpning is one of the nation's most significant Western artists. His awards are numerous and he has received more accolades than any other Western painter has today. Terpning has won more than twenty gold and silver medals, including five Colt Awards and a Stetson Award from the prestigious Cowboy Artists of America. He also snared the coveted Prix de West Award from the National Academy of Western Art and succeeded in taking the first ever $250,000. Hubbard Art Award for Excellence. Last April, the renowned Eiteljorg Museum of American Western Art presented Terpning with the distinct honor of a lifetime achievement and he recently was awarded the John Geraghty Award for Contribution to Western Art by the Gene Autry Museum.
Regarding his list of awards, Terpning is anything but cavalier and neither is he presumptuous about the rave reviews and importance placed upon his work for nearly two decades. "I just do my paintings and consider myself fortunate to receive some awards along the way," he says modestly. His work is an outstanding tribute to the lost moments of the American West. "The American Indian fascinates me," said Terpning. "I could paint two lifetimes without running out of subject matter. I think it's important to tell the story of the Plains Indians because their history is our history - an integral part of our heritage. The history of the West is the only history America has that is uniquely our own."
Terpning was 15 when a trip to Colorado captured his heart. The experiences enjoyed in that early life stage prompted a love of Western American history that he avidly pursued through reading and intense study of historical photographs of the Plains Indians. Following a 25-year, very successful career in commercial illustrating in New York, in 1974 Terpning turned his focus to Western art. By 1977, the audience for his works had grown so dramatically, that he moved from New York to Tucson, Arizona, where he still lives and works today.
"Howard Terpning is a fantastic visual storyteller of Native American people," said David Joseph, owner and president of B & R Gallery, "His works show passion, power, insight and an incredible knowledge of his subject matter. We consider him to be the finest artist of Plains Indian history, and we are extremely grateful to have him visit our gallery - it is a true honor."
When asked what initial impressions he hopes people get from his art, Terpning said, "People often tell me that they feel an actual sense of presence within the setting as they view my work. It's not a three-dimensional issue, but one that comes from emotion. I strive to paint with integrity, and I want people to feel that the works have been honestly done. I believe this brings a higher level of respect for what I do."
Since 1981, the limited edition print art of Howard Terpning has been published exclusively by The Greenwich Workshop of Shelton, Connecticut, and is available only through authorized dealers. Greenwich Workshop is the leading publisher of limited edition fine art in North America.
