For immediate release January 17, 2002
St. Andrews.... Bill Taylor, President of the Atlantic Salmon Federation (ASF), is pleased to announce that Andrew Goode of Brunswick, Maine has been promoted to the position of Vice President, US Programs for the international organization. In this new position, Mr. Goode will make policy-makers in Washington, DC more aware of the issues facing the few remaining wild Atlantic salmon populations in the United States and what can be done to conserve this extraordinary species. He will also assume a more prominent role in developing ASF policies and positions specific to US Atlantic salmon issues and in fundraising efforts to support ASFs US programs.
Mr. Taylor says, During his three years with ASF, Andy has increasingly accepted more responsibilities. He has made great strides in positioning ASF to effectively address the most pressing issues facing wild Atlantic salmon in the United States. He is highly respected throughout the conservation community and among government leaders. I know that he will further build upon his already impressive track record with ASF and do much to help further our salmon conservation mission in his new capacity."
Mr. Goode joined ASF as Director of U.S. Programs in 1999. In this position, he was responsible for leading ASF's efforts to conserve and restore New England's Atlantic salmon runs. Working closely with the Federations Regional Councils, volunteers, and other conservation groups, Mr. Goode helped heighten the publics awareness of the wild Atlantic salmons predicament in the United States and the need to conserve and restore the species and its habitat to health.
Mr. Goode, through his volunteer pursuits, education, and work experience, has always shown his concern for and his commitment to the environment. He earned a Bachelors degree in Economics from Colby College and a Masters of Environmental Management from Duke University. An avid outdoorsman, Mr. Goode is a member and active volunteer of many conservation organizations. Before joining ASF, his previous work experience included seven years with the Nature Conservancy in New England and two years as Conservation Coordinator for The Orvis Company of Manchester, Vermont.
While he is pleased with his new appointment, Mr. Goode is more concerned with what must be done to prevent the extinction of Maines wild Atlantic salmon, the last of the United States wild populations. There is still the opportunity to restore depleted Atlantic salmon populations in the United States. We need increased funding to focus on the most serious problems affecting our rivers. In Maine, we are concerned with reconnecting historical river habitat to salmon returning from the ocean and working with industry to minimize the impacts of water withdrawals and salmon farming on the recovery effort," says Mr. Goode.
The Atlantic Salmon Federation is an international, non-profit organization that promotes the conservation and wise management of the wild Atlantic salmon and its environment. ASF has a network of seven regional councils (Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick, Quebec, Maine and New England), which have a membership of more than 150 river associations and 40,000 volunteers. The regional councils cover the freshwater range of wild Atlantic salmon in Canada and the United States.
