Sinus Pain Awareness Month: Relief & Prevention of Acute & Chronic Sinusitis
Early Treatment of Sinus Pain Prevents Chronic Disorder
New Jersey/ New York Metro ---- February marks National Sinus Pain Awareness Month. With approximately 37 million Americans suffering from chronic sinusitis, Kenneth F. Garay, MD, FACS, medical director of The Centers for Sinus and Nasal Disease, recommends early medical intervention for those suffering persistent sinus pain or congestion.
Sinusitis, the inflammation of the nasal sinuses, may be caused by colds, allergies and/or pollutants in the air," explains Garay, a board-certified otolaryngologist. There are several types of treatment options, and each is more effective when the patient seeks early medical attention."
While a common cold, which may cause nasal congestion, lasts about 7 to 14 days, acute sinusitis lasts longer and has more complex symptoms. Chronic sinusitis, a more common disorder, may even last for months. When symptoms of nasal congestion or sinus pain are reoccurring or last for more than 14 days, they should not be ignored.
If symptoms such as facial pain, postnasal drip, and nasal congestion persist for a long period of time, the person should consult a physician to determine whether he or she has either acute or chronic sinusitis and establish which treatment protocol is best for his or her condition," states Garay.
Both acute and chronic sinusitis can be treated with antibiotics. But for chronic sinusitis, the effects of antibiotics may only be temporary. In some cases of chronic sinus pain and infection, surgery may be necessary, concludes Garay.
