IDT and Jungo partner to provide innovative, flexible solution for embedded Linux ADSL gateway applications

IDT and Jungo Software Technologies Inc have cooperated in two production ready reference designs that deliver cost-effective, innovative system solutions based on the IDT RC32355.

Singapore, 30 January, 2002 -IDT and Jungo Software Technologies Inc have cooperated in two production ready reference designs that deliver cost-effective, innovative system solutions based on the IDT RC32355. These reference designs accelerate time to market for the region's makers of asymmetric digital subscriber line (ADSL) residential and small office/home office (SOHO) gateways.

IDT's RC32355 integrated communications processor together with IDT's high-density quad and octal CODEC devices also help Optical Solutions' FiberPath 400 fibre-to-the-home family of products to meet demanding system price and performance challenges. The Optical Solutions' networking and system solution incorporates a passive optical network (PON) for broadband delivery of voice, video, and high-speed data directly to homes, businesses, and multi-dwelling units.

To address the variety of ADSL systems currently being deployed, IDT developed two reference designs based on the company's RC32355, the 79RP351, a data-only ADSL modem optimised for system cost, and the 79RP355, a more fully-featured design for gateways and integrated access devices (IADs).

In these designs, Jungo's OpenRG embedded software is optimised for IDT's RC32355 integrated communications processor, delivering a feature-rich platform that incorporates advanced system management functions to simplify the installation, management and network configuration functions associated with gateway products.

"The key challenge for Taiwan's gateway designers is to deliver a flexible platform at a competitive system cost that can quickly adapt to the changing requirements of this emerging market," said Benton Lim, Country Manager, IDT South Asia.

"We feel that Jungo's OpenRG software best addresses these needs and, in addition, offers significant capabilities to end users including system installation, configuration and network management. These capabilities will become increasingly important as total cost of ownership emerges as a key challenge."
The availability of Jungo's OpenRG software improves overall time to market by offering Taiwan's equipment manufacturers a one-stop shop for a comprehensive software package featuring network security, Internet sharing, system management, virtual private networks (VPNs), and plug-and-play home networking technology.

Additionally, since the OpenRG software platform is Linux based, Asian customers are able to leverage broadly available industry applications.

"The technology collaboration between IDT and Jungo provides an integrated, robust and comprehensive solution at a compelling price point for Taiwan's manufacturers and OEMs," said John Lin, director, Asia at Jungo Software Technology, of Jungo Software Technology. "The jointly developed reference design takes the best of IDT's silicon and pairs it with our customised software solution to deliver a higher level of overall system functionality."

Jungo's OpenRG software is a specialised Linux-based operating system that enables Asia's original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to bring broadband CPE, such as residential gateways, SOHO gateways and IADs to market quickly.

Optical Solutions' FiberPath 400 system, now in its fourth generation with thousands of live deployments, converges voice, video and data on an all-optical network, terminating directly at the customer's premises.

The integration of an on-chip ATM controller on the RC32355, coupled with the inclusion of an industry-standard Utopia interface, allows the device to deliver superior performance, unsurpassed bandwidth provisioning within the system and simple connectivity to the wide area network (WAN) interface.

The adoption of the RC32355 across Optical Solutions' product family of FiberPath solutions demonstrates the scalability of the RC32355 architecture to address both gateway and head-end equipment. IDT's quad and octal CODECs provide an unprecedented level of integration, significantly saving system cost and space.

Using FiberPath 400, service providers can deliver Internet access at up to 100 Mbps, streaming IP video, hundreds of analog and digital CATV channels, and multi-line telephony service to residents, businesses, and the broader community.

The 79RP351 and 79RP355 reference design platforms are available today and priced individually at US$2500 and US$4500 respectively.
