SyncML Device Management Makes Public Debut; The SyncML Initiative Showcases Cooperation by
Device Manufacturers and Server Solutions Providers
Amsterdam, The Netherlands, January 29, 2002 -- The SyncML Initiative Ltd. today presented its first public real-time demonstration of SyncML Device Management (SyncML DM) by delivering instant changes to preferences and settings of five different handsets via live connections to five different servers. The SyncML Initiative is the leading open industry standards organization for universal synchronization of remote data and personal information across multiple networks, platforms and devices.
Device Management allows third parties (carriers, service providers, and corporate information management departments) to easily and cost-efficiently carry out device and mobile terminal configuration tasks on behalf of the user. For example, setting software parameters, conducting remote troubleshooting, servicing terminals, and installing and upgrading software can be conveniently and securely accomplished through SyncML Device Management.
Today´s demo was the first in an aggressive set of steps toward developing an open, universal, interoperable, and secure protocol for Device Management, named SyncML Device Management, in early 2002.
"Device Management is a natural extension of SyncML core technology," said Mr. Douglas Heintzman, Chairman of the SyncML Initiative as he presented the first public SyncML DM demo. "SyncML Device Management takes into account both the interoperability and security considerations, which are becoming increasingly important in the rapidly growing device management market."
"This year we will see millions of SyncML enabled terminals, devices and servers coming to the market, which also means that the demand for an interoperable device management software protocol is increasing," continued Heintzman. "Today´s demonstration marks an important milestone and it underlines the serious commitment from Ericsson, Motorola, Starfish, Openwave, IBM, Nokia, Symbian, Matsushita and the other members of the SyncML Initiative towards making Device Management work."
